Dragon Boat Festival English Introduction

The Dragon Boat Festival, known as "Duanwu Festival" in Chinese, is one of the most significant traditional festivals celebrated in China. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the lunar calendar, which usually corresponds to late May or early June in the Gregorian calendar. This festival has a history that spans over 2,000 years and is steeped in rich cultural traditions and historical significance.

One of the most iconic customs associated with the Dragon Boat Festival is dragon boat racing. Teams of paddlers race in long, narrow boats shaped like dragons, accompanied by drums to keep rhythm. This activity not only showcases teamwork and skill but also pays homage to Qu Yuan, a renowned poet and statesman from ancient China who drowned himself in a river after being exiled. Legend has it that local villagers raced out in their boats to save him, but unfortunately, they were too late. To honor his memory, people began throwing rice balls wrapped in bamboo leaves into the water to prevent fish from eating his body, giving rise to the tradition of eating zongzi today.

Zongzi, sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, are another essential part of the festival. These delicious treats come in various shapes and flavors, depending on regional preferences. Some are filled with sweet ingredients like red bean paste, while others contain savory fillings such as pork or salted egg yolk. The preparation of zongzi is often a family affair, symbolizing unity and cooperation among relatives.

In addition to dragon boat races and eating zongzi, people also hang calamus and moxa leaves at their doorways to ward off evil spirits. Drinking realgar wine, believed to have medicinal properties, is another common practice during this time. Children sometimes wear colorful amulets made of silk or cloth, which are thought to bring good fortune and protection.

The Dragon Boat Festival serves as more than just a celebration; it reflects the deep respect for tradition and history held by the Chinese people. By participating in these activities, individuals connect with their heritage and pay tribute to the legacy of those who came before them.
