King Jin Ping of the Jin State wanted to enjoy music and asked Master Kuang to play the qin (a traditional Chinese musical instrument). Before Master Kuang finished playing, King Jin Ping said, "I have heard that the sound of the qin is clear and high-pitched for gentlemen, while heavy and muffled for commoners. Why does your qin sound like this?"
Master Kuang replied, "I have heard that a gentleman's heart is like a still mirror or calm water; his qin sounds clear and long-lasting. A commoner's heart is like tangled threads in the wind, and his qin sounds muffled and short-lived. If Your Majesty has impure thoughts, then my qin naturally won't sound clear."
King Jin Ping was displeased and asked, "What should I do then?"
Master Kuang said, "If Your Majesty wants the qin sound to be clear, you must first purify your heart and eliminate impure thoughts. If Your Majesty can abandon selfish desires and cultivate oneself, then all the people under heaven can live in peace."
After hearing this, King Jin Ping felt deeply ashamed and began to reform himself, working diligently on state affairs, leading to national prosperity.
